Earth Hour? I Don't Think So...

I'm all for saving the planet and going green, but something about this Earth Hour annoys me. Sorry kids, but me turning my lights off for an hour isn't going to do jack. Me focusing on using less power and fossil fuels overall WILL do jack. I think this is tokenism and symbolism at its worst. But I'm not sure I WON'T turn the lights off just for poops and giggles. So how will I make up my mind? Easy. In the next 24 hours, I'm going to ask ten people what they're doing. If majority rules, I'll meekly go along. But I don't think it will....

Pity the Poor Supermarket!

Starmktsquare_2 Do you? I don't. Might this cause me to go organic with my meat purchases once and for all? Yep! What am I talking about? Click here. Don't like it? Write to your Congressperson, write to the USDA. Write to Rev. Wright! Ummm...just kidding on that last one.

It Might Not Get Much Worse Than This

When Hillary Clinton's camp needs to retract statements she made last week about her foreign policy experience, citing a trip she made to Bosnia in 1996 when she deplaned under heavy gunfire...when no such incident occurred, that is bad enough. But when a news account quotes Sinbad contradicting Hillary's recollection of the event...yes, friends, SINBAD, I can't imagine it getting any worse. Here is the Associated Press article. Incidentally, let me translate the term "misspoke" for you. It means "lied."

Even Though...

Maureendowd Even though the NY Times employs a disproportionate number of whining, annoying, liberal dunderheads (sorry to be so redundant) like Maureen Dowd, I have to hand it to them for having the "TV Decoder," one of the freshest blogs about TV to be found anywhere. And I don't even watch much TV beyond "Mad Money," Larry King, and reruns of "Cops." Well done. P.S. I, too, thought I was a bit harsh with the use of the expression "liberal dunderhead." But I'm so not alone in using that term.

The Headcold to End all Headcolds

That's what I've had. But now I'm back. And so.........

We're People, Dammit!

Baby_bucket Erika Morphy writes in crmbuyer.com that bloggers are people, too, and praises Oracle as being one of the first major technology vendors to treat bloggers with respect by prebriefing them before the release of a product. Disclaimer: I work at Oracle, and I work on said product--although not in a PR-related capacity. BTW, anybody who gets the "Soylent Green" reference without doing a Web search earns my hugest respect. But on a more serious note, as established media start to wither before our eyes (note the dwindling size of your favorite or least favorite local paper, of your favorite business magazines, etc.), this is an issue that politicians and business alike need to deal with as they seek exposure. Sure, established media reporters have some of the more heavily clicked upon blogs, but this 'new' world is the great equalizer. She or he with great content is getting the readers and the attention. And anyone who has dealt with bloggers know they don't necessarily adhere to the same play book as the older guard. NDA? What?

World's Best Combo? That's easy...Fags and Booze!

Hey! Don't take it from me. And while you're at it, respect your elders...within reason of course.

Marathon hopeful, 101-year-old , training hard

LONDON - Already Britain’s oldest employee, 101-year-old Buster Martin now aims to become the world’s oldest marathon runner by completing the London Marathon and celebrating with a pint of beer and a cigarette.

Sprightly and bearded, he completed a half marathon at the weekend in five hours 13 minutes. The former Army physical training instructor works three days a week for a London plumbing firm and says he has trained for the April 13th race in his spare time.

“I’ve said I’ll attempt it,” he told Reuters by telephone from his workplace at Pimlico Plumbers. “I haven’t said I’ll complete it. If I do make it, all the better. I hadn’t thought of doing it before but someone asked me and the money goes to charity so why not?”

His sponsorship money will go to the Rhys Daniels Trust, which provides temporary accommodation for families of patients in specialist children’s hospitals.

Martin, who had 17 children and returned to work at the age of 99 saying he was bored after two years of retirement, would beat the previous record for world’s oldest marathon runner by eight years.
“If I finish, I’ll do what I always do and have a pint and a fag,” he said. “People ask what is my secret but I haven’t got one. They say fags and booze are bad for you—but I’m still here, aren’t I?”

How About a Restaurant Review?

Hey kids, I know this post will have no relevance to those of you who don't live in San Carlos, California. But I'm out of gas, and therefore have to plagiarize myself today. Here is a Yelp review of a new joint called "The Refuge."

Another SUPER Tuesday

Merlehome300x300_2 So as we see what unfolds today in Texas, in Ohio, in Rhode Island, I long for those days in Muskogee. Not that I've ever been there, but only good old Merle can lay it down just right, y'all:

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee
We don't take no trips on LSD
We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street
We like livin' right, and bein' free

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin'
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen
Football's still the roughest thing on campus
And the kids here still respect the college dean

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, U.S.A.

'Big Oil' is Evil!

Dr_evil_2 Umm....not necessarily so, says Ben Stein. In a column in today's New York Times, Mr. Stein provides a lesson for our two Democratic presidential hopefuls -- that attacking the profitability of Big Oil ignores the fact that regular Americans like you and I benefit from their profits. We already own much of these companies through our holdings in index funds and actively traded mutual funds, which likely constitute the bulk of our 401K plan or defined benefit (i.e., pension) fund assets. Case in point: according to Morningstar, the #1 holding of the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index (Ticker: VTSMX) is ExxonMobil. A good read.
